Free Spirit

What do we mean when we say a Free Spirit? What kind of people have or are Free Spirits? Maybe you have met a Free Spirit and you were not even aware. I just woke up this morning wondering about that and have no idea where this wondering came from. First answer that came to mind to this question was: a Free Spirit is a person who lives easily in this world. Now who do I know that shows this quality? If I know somebody who lives easily in this world, I could study him or her and than I can decide on my Free Spirit theory. A 14 year old girl walked into my vision. She lives with her mother, her father has always lived in different countries and never in the same country as the girl. He would always be there for her birthday though and his parents and sisters would also show interest on that day. On Christmas and Easter gatherings the girl was always invited and on a variety of occasions daddy would also show up. That was a good relationship. An ideal father she had. He loved her, that was obvious.
So after 12 happy years primary school ended and secundary school was in sight. She and her parents decided that it would be good for the girl that her father would participate more in her life. Now her mother was quite happy with that, they would move to Spain where her father found this nice Spanish secundary school. All said and done and the day came, the first day of school. There she would go, happy as ever not speaking one word of Spanish. Never nervous or scared, she was just at ease thinking; “we’ll see how it is, just check it out” And it was lovely, the girls loved her from the minute they saw her walk in the classroom. Spanish warmth and curiousity welcomed her with wide open arms that morning. About 5 months later her father left her. He and his girlfriend were moving in together and the girlfriend was now in charge of visiting hours. Visiting hours became less and less by the month untill after 5 months they hardly saw eachother anymore. A year passed. The girl’s and her mother’s dissapointment mixed with relieve. Now at least they really got to know him and now the ideal daddy idea finally transformed to the real thing it always was: just an idea. Christmass came again and the girl and her mother would visit Amsterdam to celebrate the new year in the City. They were walking in this shopping street at newyearsday when suddenly they belonged there, this felt good. They both said lets stay here. Ofcourse this was only a feeling which passed as they travelled back to Spain. Well, this feeling grew stronger every day untill one day the mother decided it was time to pack bags and move on. In the last trimester 2nd class of secondary school she would have to plunge into a new class, have classes in Dutch now instaed of in Spanish. And you know what, she does that just as easy as in Spain. Same thought: “see how it is, just check it out”
